Jawaharlal Nehru was born on the 14th of November, 1889, in Allahabad. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru came from a family of Kashmiri Pandits.
Nehru grew up in the famous Anand Bhavan, which his father bought in the year 1930 for his family’s residence. Anand Bhavan was donated to the Indian government by Indira Gandhi in the year 1970 and is known as a historic house museum today.
In the year 1916, he married Kamala Kaul. Their daughter, Indira Gandhi, was born the next year. She would grow up to become the first (and till date, the only) female Prime Minister of India.
After enrolling at Trinity College in Cambridge in 1907, Nehru Ji graduated with honours in natural science in 1910.
Despite being nominated for the Nobel Prize 11 times between 1950 and 1955, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru never won it.
The very first speech Nehru made as the first Prime Minister of independent India, titled ‘Tryst with Destiny’, is considered to be one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century.
Nehru’s classic clothing style is still present and followed till today, with the ‘Gandhi cap’ and ‘Nehru Jacket’ being easily identifiable pieces.
Nehru was imprisoned for 3259 days during the struggle for freedom. He used to advocate against the British subjugation of Indians through indentured labour and other gross rights violations.
He joined the Home Rule League, which Annie Beasant created in 1916 since he was a huge fan and supporter of hers.
Following his death on 27th May 1964, around 1.5 million assembled in Delhi’s streets the next day to mourn their beloved Jawaharlal Nehru.
