Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is launching a paid Facebook and Instagram verification system. This new feature comes just months after Twitter revamped and relaunched its new service, Twitter Blue. According to Meta, the new service’s goal is to help emerging creators establish their presence and community faster.
The blue checkmark was previously reserved for public figures such as legislators, actors, musicians, athletes, and journalists. Meta Verified, which allows users to get the highly sought-after blue verification badge on their Instagram and Facebook accounts. Users can do so by verifying their identity for up to $15 per month.
This move for Meta comes after Snap launched its own subscription service last year, which has already converted over one million users into paying customers. Elon Musk also revamped Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, which will include a variety of features such as the blue check mark. Twitter Blue has recently expanded to more than a dozen new markets, including India and Indonesia. According to The Information, as of mid-January, only about 180,000 accounts had signed up for Twitter Blue.
Pricing Verified by Meta
The service will be tested in Australia and New Zealand later this week, and Meta hopes to roll it out globally soon. Meta Verified monthly subscriptions can be purchased directly on Instagram or Facebook for $11.99 (roughly Rs 990) on the web and $14.99 (roughly Rs 1,240) on iOS and Android, and they will provide subscribers with increased visibility and reach in areas of the platform such as search, comments, and recommendations.
Eligibility Requirements Verified by Meta
To be eligible for Meta Verified, accounts must meet minimum activity requirements, such as prior posting history, and be at least 18 years old. Applicants must also provide a government ID that matches the profile name and photo of the Facebook or Instagram account for which they are applying. Subscriptions will include proactive account impersonation monitoring.
Meta’s solution to decreased revenues
Meta’s revenue has suffered in recent years as a result of Apple’s implementation of stricter privacy changes on iOS, which limit the company’s ability to track users’ internet activities. The social media behemoth, which has not charged its customers for the majority of its services since its inception 15 years ago, derives nearly all of its revenue from advertising. Apple’s decision is expected to cost the company more than $10 billion in lost advertising revenue.
Businesses that are not eligible
However, the service will not be available to everyone. At the moment, businesses cannot apply for Meta Verified. Since its inception, the company has been dedicated to building safety and will continue to monitor and review reported violations, as well as take swift action against those who attempt to circumvent the system.
Meta has stated that there will be no changes to Instagram and Facebook accounts that have already been verified based on prior criteria such as authenticity and notability. The company also intends to expand verification access and evolve the meaning of the verified badge so that more people can trust the accounts with which they interact are genuine.
