Ashneer Grover Third Unicorn, CrickPe: All we need to know about Ashneer Grover’s
Third Unicorn, the new venture of BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover and his wife Madhuri Jain, has launched CrickPe, a cricket-focused fantasy sports app to compete with Dream11, Mobile Premier League (MPL), and Games24x7’s My11Circle.
Crickpe, Ashneer Grover’s much-anticipated new startup, is a fantasy cricket platform that competes with the likes of Dream11 and Mobile Premier League.
This announcement comes ahead of the start of the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, which begins next week. Grover announced the news on Twitter on March 23.
CrickPe is available for download on both iOS and Android devices, and it offers a range of features such as live score updates, real-time analytics, and cash prizes for winners. The app is said to have a user-friendly interface and a wide variety of leagues and tournaments to choose from.
CrickPe allows players over the age of 18 to create a virtual team of cricket players and compete for cash prizes in paid contests based on their performance in real-life games. People can also form private groups to play with a small group of friends, as well as enter contests to win prizes.
While gifts to cricketers may or may not be illegal, companies have tended to avoid arrangements involving external rewards or payouts to players, especially after the sport was rocked by booking and game-fixing scandals in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
CrickPe’s launch is timed to coincide with the upcoming IPL tournament, and users can now enter contests for IPL matches beginning March 31, 2023. This move was first reported by Moneycontrol in February 2023.
IPL tournaments are typically important for fantasy sports platforms because they see peak usage from players while also assisting in significant user acquisitions to grow their respective bases.
From BharatPe to Crickpe
Grover and his wife, Madhuri Jain Grover, founded Third Unicorn Private Limited in July of last year. The company has a total paid-up capital of 10 lahks and a share capital of 20 lahks.
Grover came with a pedigree and has been closely associated with the investment world since his post-graduate studies. He graduated from IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad and spent seven years in Kotak Mahindra’s investment banking division before joining American Express in 2013, where he led startup investments for the card network in India.
He then became the CFO of Grofers, an online grocery startup founded by his IIT-Delhi classmate Albinder Dhindsa. However, he left the startup in 2017 because he was dissatisfied with the ESOPs that were promised to him. Ashneer Grover then worked for PC Jeweller Ltd for nearly a year before joining BharatPe in June 2018.
Grover was given time off in January of last year after an audio clip of him being aggressive with a Kotak Mahindra Bank employee surfaced online. Grover and his wife were soon accused of financial irregularities, which led to their dismissal from the company in March 2022.
