Peas are fairly low in calories and contain several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Green peas have a low glycemic index and are rich in fiber and protein, all of which are important factors for blood sugar control.

Weather:

Winter temperature of 10-17 degrees Celsius is very suitable for cultivation of this crop. Hot and dry weather is not suitable.

Soils:

Pea can be grown in all types of soils except loamy soils, but fertile and well-drained soils are best. Soils with a Soil PH levels 6–7.5 are suitable.

Soil preparation:

In the last, well-ripened cattle manure should be mixed at the rate of 8 tones per acre.. Pits and drains should be made suitable. The soil should be kept in a favorable condition for germination.

Short duration Varieties:

Early Border: This variety is short variety with wrinkled seeds, harvest in 55 to 60 days.

Arkel: This variety is high yielding short variety with wrinkled seeds. Ready to harvest with green peas in 60 days.

Meteor: A variety suitable for sowing early in the season and the seeds are soft. This variety is ready to harvest with green peas in 60-65 days.

Jawahar Shatter-4 (JM-4): Plants are tall and fruits are medium in size. The seeds are green, large, and wrinkled. The yield is 2.4 tones per acre.

Hissa Rith (C.H): This variety is ready to harvest in 60 days. The peas are completely filled with seeds. The yield is 4.0 tones per acre.

Mid Season Varieties:

Bavilly: Suitable for mid season sowing. The seeds are wrinkled and sweet. Harvest in 85 days and the yield of raw peas is 4.0 tones per acre.

Jawahar Matar-1 (J.M.-1): Peas are large and attractively curved at the end. The yield is 4.8 tones per acre.

Jawaharma Ter-2 (J.Yam.-2): The yield is 4.0 tones per acre. The seeds are large and wrinkled.

IP-3 (Pant Upahar): This variety is medium in type. The seeds are medium and contains seven seeds per pea. Yields 10 tones per acre.

Azad P-1: These are harvested in 75-85 days.

Chronic types:

N.P. -29: Plants grow tall and wrinkle-seeded variety. Harvest in 10 days. Apart from these, Azad-P.1 (Intermediate), Azad-P. 2 (short-lived varieties), Azad-P. Varieties 2 and 3 (gray rot resistant varieties) can also be cultivated.

Seeds per Acre:

Seed Rate :  40-48 kg of short-duration varieties and 32-36 kg of long-duration varieties should be used per acre.

Harvesting: 60-100 days after sowing depending on the variety

Yield: 1-4.4 tones/acre

Planting time:

The crop can be sown from October 15 to November 15.

Harvesting:

The first harvest occurs 60-100 days after sowing depending on the variety. The quality of the pea is determined by the sugar content of the seed. After the first harvest  the peas can be harvest every 10 days.
